Island Peak Climbing is one of the excellent choices for novice mountaineers and seasoned climbers who want to unfold and widen their Himalayan perspective. Thumbing in its full glory at 6,189 m, Imja Tse is popularly known as Island Peak for its unique appearance, with a distinctive island-like shape surrounded by glaciers.
Your adventure of climbing Imja Tse unfolds by taking a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Arriving at Lukla, you will follow the classic Everest Base Camp Trek route. Trekking through the Sherpa settlements, like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche, you will now walk uphill approaching Chhukung. Many trekkers even prefer witnessing the Everest Base Camp, then descending back to Lobuche, from where they will reach Chhukung via Kongma La Pass.
After arriving at the picturesque setting of the Chhukung village, you will walk deep into the Imja Valley, where you will be stunned by the enchanting view of the Nuptse-Lhotse wall. Now approaching the Island base camp, you will pass the Lhotse and Imja glaciers. From base camp, you will walk on the narrow ridge that ultimately reaches the summit of the Island Peak.
Once you reach the summit, you will be spellbound by the surreal views from the top. The breathtaking vistas of Nuptse and Lhotse to the north, Makalu to the east, and Baruntse to the south make every effort to reach the peak truly worthwhile.
Our representatives will greet you and take you to the hotel when you arrive at the International Airport in Kathmandu.
You may wish to buy some trekking gear such as hats, t-shirts, walking sticks, trekking bags etc. which are easily found near your hotel.
In the evening, we will gather for a warm welcome dinner, graciously hosted by our company, where we will indulge in delightful conversation and exquisite flavors.

Your half-day guided tour of Kathmandu sounds like a wonderful introduction to the rich culture and history of Nepal. Visiting Swoyambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, offers stunning views of the city and the Himalayas.
It's one of the most famous religious sites in Nepal, with its ancient stupa and surrounding shrines. Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its impressive architecture, palaces, and temples, is a beautiful representation of the city’s rich history.
After the sightseeing, the focus will shift to the upcoming climb. The guide's briefing and equipment check are essential steps to ensure that you're fully prepared for the journey ahead. It’s a great opportunity to review safety procedures and clarify any last-minute details about the climbing itinerary.

Fly for around twenty-five minutes from Kathmandu to Lukla (2804m). Trekking takes about three hours from Lukla to Phakding (2610m).
There is an airport in the small town of Lukla, but few general stores, motels, lodges, or tea shops. On the left bank of the Dudh Koshi River, you begin your hike today from Lukla after a gentle ascent up the mountainside.
With views of a valley to your right, you descend a mountainside trail that joins your Everest route. Kusum Kang (6367m) stands at the end of this path. As you pass a Mani wall and reach Phakding, the Dudh Koshi River approaches.

Trek about four to five hours from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3441m). You hike today and cross large suspension bridges over the river.
Overlooking Monjo village (2800m) is the Sagarmatha National Park entrance, established to protect and conserve this fragile alpine ecosystem.
From there, a steep ascent takes you to Namche, where, if the weather is clear, you’ll get your first distant view of Mount Everest.
Namche, the Khumbu region’s principal trade village, hosts a lively Saturday market.

Situated between two ridges among the Khumbu's gigantic peaks, Namche offers a stunning view, with plenty of lodges, tea shops, and souvenir stores.
Before continuing on to Tengboche, it’s a great area to take a day off to acclimate to the high altitude.
You could visit the Khunde Hospital, which was established by Sir Edmund Hillary, or hike up to Syangboche (3800m) for an hour to help with acclimatization.
For an exceptional viewpoint overlooking Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kusum Kangaru, the Everest View Hotel is located above Namche.
The National Park Center and Museum, located just above the village, also offers great views.

After breakfast, the trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3860m) takes almost five hours. From Namche, the trail contours around the side of the valley, high above the Dudh Koshi River.
Along the way, you’ll get your first clear views of the great peaks of the Khumbu, including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kusum Kangaru. Passing several villages and tea shops, the trail descends steeply to a bridge over the Dudh Koshi River at Phunki Tenga (3250m).
Tengboche is famous for its legendary monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region.

After breakfast, the trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4260m) takes about five hours. You gradually descend through a forest, cross the Imja Khola, and climb steadily up to the village of Pangboche.
Pangboche lies directly opposite Ama Dablam (6,856m), offering exceptional views of the mountain, with the Gompa, Mani walls, and scattered pine trees in the foreground. As you continue your ascent, you'll pass through thick forests filled with thorny and juniper bushes.
A further two and a half hours of walking brings you to Dingboche, where you can see Sherpa people working diligently in the agricultural fields.

This morning, we will start our trek to Chukung, which will take around 4 hours. Today’s trek will also help with acclimatization as we adjust to the increasing altitude.

Today, we will embark on a 4-hour trek to reach the base camp of Island Peak. Once we arrive, we will set up our camp, where we’ll spend the night and the following day, surrounded by the stunning Himalayan landscape.

Today, we will rest at the base camp to acclimatize to the increasing altitude and the thinning air. This will help our bodies adjust and prepare for the challenging climb ahead.
In the afternoon, we will take a short trek to explore the surrounding area and further prepare for tomorrow's ascent. Overnight in a tented camp, where you can relax and rest for the adventure to come.

We will wake up early this morning as today is the main adventure day to summit Island Peak. After a hearty breakfast, we will begin our climb. From Camp 1, we will traverse through a gully to the right, making our way up to a wide stone field.
We will then cross a ridge leading to the glacier and navigate through crevasses. Upon reaching the summit, we will take in the breathtaking views, capture some memorable photos, and savor the moment of achievement.
Afterward, we will begin our descent and trek back to Chukung, reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve just experienced.

Today, we will retrace our steps along the same route to reach Tengboche, which will take approximately 6 hours.
Once we arrive, you can rest and relax for the remainder of the day, enjoying the peaceful surroundings of Tengboche.

We will slowly descend from Tengboche Monastery, making our way all the way down to Namche Bazaar.
Upon reaching Namche Bazaar in the afternoon, you'll have free time to rest and relax in this bustling town, the heart of the Everest region. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and take in the beautiful surroundings.

Today will be a long but rewarding final walk towards Lukla. We will begin by descending the long path before crossing the bridge, then continue on through Monju and Phakding, where we'll stop for lunch. As we trek, we’ll enjoy the lush green landscapes and pass through Sherpa villages, with incredible mountain views surrounding us.
After a 7-8 hour walk, we will finally reach Lukla. Once there, you’ll have some free time to stroll around the area while the guides reconfirm your flight ticket back to Kathmandu. In the evening, we will celebrate the successful journey with a delicious dinner and enjoy our last night in Lukla.

This morning, we will fly back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival at the Domestic Airport, you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore Kathmandu at your leisure.

Introduced as a trekking peak by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, Island Peak is considered a PD or 2B alpine mountain. This alpine grading is given for the peaks that require some technical climbing and include exposed glaciers. The trek is quite easy, but the route from base camp to the summit is a challenge. Moreover, you have to cross the vast exposed glaciers and walk on the ridgeline, which adds a layer of two-fold difficulty in the expedition. Crossing the giant, gaping crevasses through ladders, climbing ropes at such a high altitude, will definitely test your wits during this journey of climbing and expedition in nepal.
If you are thinking about whether you are perfect for Island Peak Climbing, then the first thing you should consider is your physical fitness and mental resilience. You have to walk on the steep uphill and downhill, pass the terrain full of scree and boulders, while walking continuously for 6 to 8 hours every day.
So, a good level of physical fitness and mental resilience is a must to tackle the difficulties of the trek. This trekking peak is called an introductory climb for 700 and 8000-meter peaks. Therefore, it’s okay if you don’t have any prior mountaineering experience; however, you should have prior high-altitude trekking experience. And you need to be someone who possesses basic snow and mountaineering skills, such as walking with crampons, climbing ladders, etc, to successfully complete this expedition.
The first thing you need to do is evaluate your physical fitness. After analysing your fitness level, you should incorporate the strength training and cardio exercises in your routine months before the actual journey. The strength training exercises will help to increase your leg and core muscles while increasing your overall stamina. Likewise, cardio will help to increase your endurance. Make sure you stay consistent while doing these exercises.
Another thing is that you should be mentally prepared for the journey. Traveling to a remote area amidst the mountains is not as easy as you think. There will be times when you will be physically tired. During those times, your mental resilience and determination will move you forward to complete this Island Peak expedition. Also, you should prepare yourself with some mountain climbing skills like scrambling the surface, using an ice axe, etc, for climbing Island Peak.
Spring and autumn are considered the best times for trekking in Nepal. And, expedition of trekking peaks, such as Island Peak climbing, is no exception. The pleasant climate and great visibility not only offer you panoramic Himalayan views but also help during summiting the Island Peak. Moreover, the dry trails offer comfortable conditions for walking long hours on difficult terrain.
Likewise, during spring(March to May), you will be enchanted by the different shades of rhododendron blooming, forming a contrast with the lush greenery of the forest. Spotting various wild flowers and diverse wildlife in the Sagarmatha National Park will keep your journey entertaining. During autumn(September to November), you can see the different allure of the Everest region after monsoon rainfall nourishes nature.
During the Island Peak Himalayas journey, you will have an accommodation mix of cozy teahouses and a tented camp. The tea houses alongside the trail will offer you rooms on a twin-sharing basis. Even though the Everest region is considered a remote area, teahouses will offer you basic to moderate services. You can access services such as hot water, WiFI, charging electric, etc, but you will have to pay a certain extra amount.
As you are approaching the summit, you need to stay 2 nights at the Island Base Camp in the tented camp. Don’t worry. Our team will offer you basic necessities for staying at the camp.
You can eat all three meals ( breakfast, lunch, and dinner) at the cozy tea houses. For breakfast, you may get light foods like porridge, muesli, bread jam, soup, puri tarkari, etc. For lunch and dinner, you will be eating food rich in carbohydrates like daal bhat tarkari, pasta, chowmein, mom,o etc. During the camp stay, our team will be making food for you. However, let us know beforehand about your food preferences and allergy if any.
You will need three trekking permits to successfully climb Island Peak. The two permits, i.e., Sagarmatha National Park Permit and Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit, are the same as those of the EBC trek. However, you will need an additional NMA Island Peak Climbing Permit. The cost of NMA can vary according to the season.

Likewise, every trekker has to pay $20 per person to obtain a Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit. The cost for Sagarmatha National Park will be NRS 1500 per person(around $15) for trekkers of SAARC nationals. Other foreign nationals have to pay NRS 3000 per person(around $30) for this permit.
One of the major concerns while climbing Island Peak is altitude sickness. When you climb to a higher altitude, you will have less oxygen to breathe in. If your body cannot properly adapt to such low oxygen in the thin air, you will suffer from the symptoms of altitude sickness. Hence, it is necessary to acclimate properly, stay hydrated, and eat well during the trek to avoid high altitude sickness. At the same time, make sure to ascend gradually both during trekking and climbing the summit.
The cost for the Island Peak expedition will be around $1800 to $2600 per person. Our Island Peak climbing package includes all the accommodation, meals, cost of guides and porters, permits, etc. However, our Island Peak climbing cost of $2400 per person doesn’t include visa, airfare, and other personal types of expenses.
